Abstract
Purpose: There is an increasing demand for infrastructures that support clinical trials and research (clinical trial infrastructures) in Chungbuk National University Hospital (CBNUH). Main causes of this demand are changes in funding trends of research grants and recent completion of Osong BioValley, which requires strengthening the research competency in CBNUH as an academic medical center. Therefore, it is crucial to prepare a strategic plan for building clinical trial infrastructures.

Materials and Methods: The current status of clinical trials and research grants in CBNUH was evaluated across study types. Organizations and services supporting clinical trials and research were surveyed by reviewing (1) web sites of the top five institutions receiving NIH grants in the USA, and (2) Korean regional clinical trial centers, (3) strategic plans of three academic medical centers in USA. Items extracted as clinical trial infrastructures were sorted into the following five domains: human resources, supporting services, core facilities, information technologies, and other resources. The priorities of these items were assessed by a questionnaire survey performed over the clinical professors at CBNUH.

Results: The high-priority items for building clinical trial infrastructures were (1) clinical research coordinators, research professors, biostatistician in human resource domain; (2) scientific review of protocol, statistical support, and participant recruitment and retention in supporting service domain; (3) human tissue banks, human-originated specimen banks, and medical imaging services in core facilities domain; (4) clinical research management system for investigators, and database management system in information technology domain; (5) assistance in preparing institutional review board application and documents, assistance in proposal preparation, inter-department study coordination and operational
approval, and research document templates in other resources domain.

Conclusion: A strategic plan for building infrastructures in CBNUH was presented based on clinical professors¡¯ needs for clinical trial infrastructures and potential collaboration with Osong BioValley.
